Working on apt bot protection measures

Are merchants or e-commerce companies ready to defend their digital assets against automated threats or bot attacks?

In a recent study, DataDome found that a significant majority of UK-based digital businesses are inadequately protected against simple bot attacks. The study featured more than 2,400 major UK websites.

The company subjected websites to three distinct types of bot requests (HTTP requests to the target website, a bot that adopts a user agent similar to Google’s official user agent and a fake Chrome bot). “Protected” means that the website successfully detected and blocked 100% of test bots. Only 7.9% of the UK websites tested successfully blocked all simple bot requests, while a staggering 69.4% allowed all types of bots to pass through.

Other key findings included one in four websites had implemented a bot detection tool on the home page and showed significant variation in the performance of the different bot detection tools, which typically failed to detect over 50% of bots. Traditional tools like reCAPTCHA are bypassed, even by simple bots. CAPTCHAs are only effective when integrated with highly accurate, real-time bot protection that provides a complete feedback loop.

DataDome recommended that when it comes to bot management, not all specialized tools are equally effective. It’s best to test and compare tools for accuracy and performance.
