Preparing for decentralized and democratized Internet

How the third generation of Internet services or Web 3.0 is going to add value to travel e-commerce? A couple of vital areas that are being scrutinized are the shopping experience and also the protection of one’s data.

Web 3.0 is expected to make the web more intelligent and consumers’ lives simpler. Considering that planning and buying so many components of travel tends to be a long and complex process, it is important to assess how decentralisation and all the layers of Web 3.0 are going to impact the payment experience, a critical aspect that impacts the conversion rate.

Referring to convergence of emerging technologies and acknowledging that there are lot of things to talk about, Laurie Gablehouse, Global Head of Travel Solutions, Worldline, said “Because it (Web 3.0 and what all it encompasses) is new, things can be done…transacted in a very different way, that opens up opportunities not just in the augmented reality (AR) side of things, but in lot more ways.” This generation of web is about decentralized and democratized Internet. Each aspect has to be scrutinized. For instance, the difference between Web 3.0 and the #metaverse. If Web 3.0 is not intrinsically immersive, what are the use cases? Metaverse is an immersive three-dimensional space powered by augmented, virtual, and mixed reality, which allows users to interact with 3D objects.

So take a deep dive and prepare for it.

“(AR/ VR) tends to be the most obvious (connection with Web 3.0) assessment of all of this – do I need this (as a business)? Yes, there is a room for immersion option – you can almost “touch things”. That offers a way to do business, an opportunity that wasn’t there earlier. So distribution of products that way is an important aspect that needs to be considered going forward. But behind all that there is an infrastructure. What does that really mean technically? What does decentralizing my content mean? How to prepare for that? What is the business case? The situation today, as an airline or a hotel or an OTA, can be deemed as – how should I prioritize money and resources for something that isn’t even being completely understood. So various aspects of the ecosystem (of Web 3.0) have value to offer, they need to be evaluated and integrated into the roadmap,” explained Laurie.

She elaborated further and said any of these technologies (for instance, in case Web 3.0, it is set up on the latest version of HTTP, AI etc.) require “money” and call for a commercial reason to go ahead. “You can now sell in AR. Connection to payment services are already worked out,” Laurie said. She also highlighted the case of Spanish airline Air Europa releasing the NFT (non-fungible token) flight ticket series. “It is about how you put pieces of content and sell them (for e. g. NFT ticket, transaction recorded on blockchain, NFT and a matching flight ticket etc.). That’s what Web 3.0 will be supportive of,” said Laurie.

“It is time to understand what Web 3.0 can do for you”, Laurie said, as a final thought.
